What is MCBIOS?
|
MCBIOS is the MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society. The organization
sponsors an annual conference in the mid-south region.
MCBIOS seeks to foster networking and collaboration,
and promote the professional development of its members.
Both senior members and students will find MCBIOS to be
a welcoming environment for both presenting on-going research in the
form of posters and presentations, as well as publishing peer-reviewed
papers based on that work in the annual proceedings.

Call for Participation
|
The Conference Program Committee invites you to submit an abstract for either a poster or
platform (oral) presentation. Abstracts are limited to 250 words in length. Participants
presenting either a poster or a talk will be eligible to submit a manuscript for publication in
the Conference Proceedings. As in previous years, we plan to publish the proceedings in
BMC Bioinformatics, a highly-ranked open-access journal.
We are also seeking volunteers to serve on various MCBIOS Conference and Society
committees. Please contact Daniel Berleant, pres. (jdberleant@ualr.edu) or Doris Kupfer,
sec. (doris.kupfer@faa.gov), to volunteer. We are also looking for volunteers to lead the society (board or
committee members) and to form local chapters throughout the region. Please contact
any current board member to volunteer or
for more information. For 2010, we are featuring a track on applications of computing in biology,
intended for practicing biologists who are using computing or computerized equipment in their work.

Topics
|
The conference is open to all topics within the areas of bioinformatics and computational biology. For 2010, we are featuring a track of applications of computing in biology, intended for practicing biologists who are using computing or computerized equipment in their work. Based on abstract submissions and suggestions that we receive (see below), technical sessions and panel discussions will be chosen. Topics include sequence analysis, image processing, microarrays analysis, protein structure/function prediction, gene finding algorithms, genomics, metagenomics, pathway analysis, systems biology and metabolic/cellular simulations and applications. Other bioinformatics topics are also welcome.

- The 2010 MCBIOS conference will be held in Centennial Hall in the
Student Union building on the Arkansas State University campus in Jonesboro, AR,
located in northeast Arkansas near the Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky borders.
It is accessible by Memphis International Airport.

Student Participation
|
Students are invited to submit abstracts for oral presentations or posters.
Student awards for best posters and oral presentations will be presented on Saturday,
February. The awards are sponsored by the Great Plains Network (http://greatplains.net).
To be awarded, the work must be presented (in either poster or oral presentation)
by the student(s), one of whom must be listed as the first author, and one of whom
must be present for the Saturday afternoon award ceremony.

| MCBIOS History |
|
The first two MCBIOS conference were held in Little Rock Arkansas. The themes were
"Building Networks" and "Bioinformatics: A Systems Approach", respectively. In 2006
and 2007, the conference was held in Louisiana. We met in Baton Rouge in 2006, where
the theme was "Bioinformatics: A Calculated Discovery", and in New Orleans in 2007,
where the theme was "Computational Frontiers in Biomedicine". The 2008 conference
was held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the theme was "Systems Biology - Bridging the Omics".
The sixth annual MCBIOS (MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society)
was held in Starkville, MS on February. The theme was "Transformational Bioinformatics:
Delivering Value from Genomes". The seventh MCBIOS will be in Jonesboro, AR on
Feb. 19-20, 2010. The theme will be "Bioinformatics: Systems, Biology, Informatics and Computation".
The annual MCBIOS conference has historically attracted internationally renowned speakers,
including David Mount, author of the popular bioinformatics textbook Bioinformatics:
Sequence and Genome Analysis, Michael Gribskov, President of the International Society
for Computational Biology, Alan Leshner, AAAS CEO and executive publisher of Science,
Richard A. Gibbs, Director of the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center, and Winston
Hide, Director of the South African National Bioinformatics Institute.
The conference attendance in previous years has reflected its status as the premier
forum in the region, gathering faculty and students from all states in the region and beyond.
